- Know your Food - Flavouring Substances
Flavouring Substances are added to Food products either to regain the flavour it would have lost during processing e.g. juices or to add a new desired flavour e.g. in case of biscuits, vanilla flavour may be added to otherwise food product without any flavour.
Based on the resemblance of the flavouring substance to its natural occurrence, it is classified as natural, nature identical or artificial flavouring substance.

- Know your Food - Hydrolyzed Vegetable ProteinHydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) is used to enhance the flavour of processed foods such as soups and snacks.
HVP is created from cereals and legumes such as groundnut, corn, soy and wheat by processing that results in proteins being broken down into amino acids. One of those amino acids is glutamic acid which is a form of monosodium glutamate (MSG).
Though HVP is not same as MSG it does contain the compound. So, if you are sensitive to MSG you should avoid consuming foods that contain HVP. Also, take care the food ingredient label may use differen terms to indicate the source of HVP such as Hydrolyzed Groundnut Protein.
- Contains Trans Fat
Trans Fat are type of fatty acid that are formed either naturally in meats and dairy products like milk or artificially created during the manufacturing process of processed food.
The artificially formed Trans Fat increases LDL cholesterol (i.e. bad cholesterol) level and reportedly reduces HDL Cholesterol (i.e. Good one) which may lead to cardiac problem.
There is a global movement to encourage Food Products to be Trans Fat free.The Indian Food law requires the company to state that product contains Trans Fat if content of Trans Fat is more than 0.2 gms per serving size.
Keep trans fat consumption as low as possible by avoiding foods that states Contain Trans fats on their packages
- Highly Processed!
Additives are added to the packaged foods for different reasons varying from increasing shelf life, to provide flavour and texture, increasing nutrition quality or required to manufacture some types of food.
One of the ways to determine the degree of Processing is the number of additives you find in the ingredient list. The higher the number of additives greater is the degree of processing. Additives can be identified by looking for ingredients that begin with 'E' and have a number in them.
It is generally recommended that food that is closer to nature is better hence it is better to choose food products with lesser number of additives.

Energy available from a food is based on Carbohydrate, Fat and Protein present in it. The ideal ratio of energy obtained from these components is 65% from Carbohydrates, 20% from Fat and 15% from protein.
More than 30% of energy available in this product is from FAT, which is 50% more than the ideal amount. Foods with High Fat are often loaded with Saturated Fat and Trans Fat both of which contribute to life style diseases including diabetes, obesity or Cardiovascular.

Thus, it is important to eat food which has each nutrient in the right quantity and limit food products that give too much of one nutrient.
